John Lane
VP of Product · Indianapolis
I’ve spent my career trying to understand how things work — and then figuring out how to make them work better for people.
That started with a history degree from Purdue, which taught me less about dates and more about systems: how institutions form, how decisions compound, how context shapes outcomes. It’s a lens I still use every day.
I came to product management through business analysis, picking up an MBA from Butler’s Lacy School along the way — which gave me language for business instincts I’d already developed by accident. Now I lead product and technology at Membershine in Indianapolis, building tools for a space that’s been underserved by modern software.
My job is to keep the roadmap honest — grounded in what users actually experience, not what the org chart finds convenient.
What I Believe
Convictions that shape how I lead and build.
The best product work happens when the team trusts each other. Everything else follows from that.
The best engineering teams want a PM who understands what they're building and why it's hard.
For everyone's time. Sloppy prioritization wastes the most expensive resource in the building.
Where I've Worked
A timeline of where I've led product.
Own product strategy and technology roadmap for a SaaS platform serving the membership organization market. Partner with engineering to balance near-term delivery with longer-horizon platform investments.
Drove product development and feature delivery for Membershine's core platform, translating stakeholder and user feedback into a prioritized backlog aligned with business objectives.
Lead product for a platform targeting homeowner association management — deep operational complexity, fragmented incumbents. Build feedback loops to surface real friction rather than assumed priorities.
Managed the product lifecycle for HOA Start's management platform, working remotely to align feature delivery with the needs of HOA boards and property managers.
Owned product backlog and roadmap for the promotional products industry. Successfully delivered AI features and achieved a 90% increase in product usage through systematic application of customer and stakeholder input.
Spearheaded updates to the granting process, reducing FTE needs by 18%. Mentored other product managers and implemented seamless product updates to institutional clients.
Created a comprehensive product roadmap for restructuring the accounting platform and implemented new API structure to integrate with vendors and clients. Managed feature roadmap through Epics and User Stories.
Spearheaded business analysis and planning, driving cultural and digital transformation. Developed a strategic plan to address audit and accounting control failures while reducing FTE.
Led cross-functional teams and managed day-to-day operations, building the foundational leadership skills that informed a transition into product management.
Managed client relationships and drove engagement for institutional accounts, building deep understanding of customer needs that later shaped a product-led career.
